Chapel Hill's pottery scene is small but craft-serious for a town of 62,000, anchored by the UNC ceramics program and proximity to the deep North Carolina pottery tradition. Studios cluster downtown, on Franklin Street, in Carrboro across the line, and out in Hillsborough. Prices are mid-market for a university town: drop-in classes from $45, six-week courses from $250-375. Several studios are run by UNC graduates teaching rigorous multi-level wheel curricula. Memberships with kiln access are available but waitlisted at the popular downtown and Carrboro studios. Hand-building drops in easily; wheel throwing usually requires the intro class first. Date-night and drop-in classes are common downtown. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For longer study, the Carrboro and Hillsborough studios offer the deepest curricula and best connections to the broader Seagrove and Penland traditions.
