Baltimore's pottery scene is concentrated in Station North, Hampden, Mount Vernon, Fells Point, and the Highlandtown arts district. Prices are friendly: drop-in classes from $40, six-week courses from $225-350. The community is craft-serious thanks to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) ceramics program, which is one of the strongest in the country. Several studios are run by MICA graduates and faculty teaching rigorous wheel curricula and visiting-artist workshops. Memberships with kiln access are widely available, though waitlists are common at the popular Station North and Highlandtown studios. Hand-building drops in easily; wheel throwing usually requires the intro class first. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For serious students, Baltimore offers progression that beats most East Coast cities at lower prices.
