Richmond's pottery scene runs through Carytown, the Fan District, Scott's Addition, Church Hill, and Manchester. Prices are friendly: drop-in classes from $40, six-week courses from $225-325. The community is craft-serious thanks to the Virginia Commonwealth University ceramics program, which is one of the strongest in the Southeast. Several studios are run by VCU graduates teaching rigorous multi-level wheel and hand-building curricula. Memberships with kiln access are widely available and affordable. Date-night and drop-in classes are common in Carytown and Scott's Addition. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For longer study, the Fan and Manchester studios have the deepest multi-level progression and the strongest connections to the broader VCU ceramics community.
