Fireborn Studios
2338 Sarah St, Pittsburgh, PA 15203

Pittsburgh has a strong pottery tradition tied to the broader fine-arts community at Carnegie Mellon and the Society for Contemporary Craft. Studios today are spread across the Strip District, Lawrenceville, the South Side, and across the river in the North Side. Prices are unusually friendly for the level of teaching available: intro classes from $40, six-week courses from $200-325. The scene is craft-serious without being pretentious, with several studios run by working potters who teach rigorous wheel and hand-building progressions. Memberships with kiln access and member shelves are widely available and affordable. Date-night and drop-in sessions are easy to find in Lawrenceville and the Strip. For serious study, the Strip District and Lawrenceville studios have the deepest multi-level curricula.
