Knoxville's pottery scene is concentrated in the Old City, downtown, North Knoxville, and out near the University of Tennessee campus. Prices are unusually friendly: drop-in classes from $35, six-week courses from $200-300. The community is craft-serious thanks to the UT ceramics program and the broader East Tennessee studio-craft tradition (with Arrowmont in nearby Gatlinburg), with several studios offering rigorous multi-level wheel curricula at prices well below the coasts. Memberships with kiln access are widely available and affordable. Hand-building drops in easily; wheel throwing usually requires the intro class first. Date-night and drop-in classes are common in the Old City. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For serious students, Knoxville offers exceptional value with deep curricula and access to the broader Appalachian craft community.
