St. Louis's pottery scene runs through Cherokee Street, the Grove, Maplewood, and University City. Prices are friendly: drop-in classes from $35, six-week courses from $200-300. The community is craft-serious thanks to the Washington University and Webster University ceramics programs, with several studios offering rigorous wheel curricula. Memberships with kiln access are widely available and unusually affordable. Hand-building drops in easily; wheel throwing usually requires the intro class first. Date-night and drop-in classes are common in Cherokee Street and the Grove. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For serious students, St. Louis offers exceptional value with deep multi-level progression at prices that would be twice as high on the coasts; for a casual evening, Cherokee Street is walkable from dinner.
