Kansas City's pottery scene is concentrated in the Crossroads Arts District, West Bottoms, Brookside, and out in Westport and the Country Club Plaza. Prices are friendly: drop-in classes from $40, six-week courses from $225-325. The community runs craft-serious thanks to the Kansas City Art Institute ceramics program, which is one of the strongest in the Midwest. Several studios are run by KCAI graduates teaching rigorous wheel and hand-building progressions alongside the standard beginner programming. Memberships with kiln access are widely available. Hand-building drops in easily; wheel throwing usually requires a short intro session first. Kids programs run year-round at the community art centers. For longer study, the Crossroads and West Bottoms studios have the deepest curricula and access to the broader KCAI community.
